Mohammed Alabbar: The Architect of Global Dubai

His fame spread and his name became known more than twenty years ago when he founded Emaar Properties as a joint-stock company. He was widely regarded as a pioneer of Dubai’s modern renaissance, leading to a major transformative shift with global projects. At the time, few knew that this remarkable figure possessed a vast reserve of forward-thinking economic ideas and was deeply committed to nation-building. Since then, his name has continued to grow in that direction.

He became known as an active businessman in many fields, most notably real estate, retail, hospitality, e-commerce, technology, logistics, food and beverages, and venture capital. Since 1997, he has been at the forefront of the global real estate scene, leading prominent development companies such as Emaar Properties and Eagle Hills.

He spearheaded the growth of Emaar Properties, achieving an unparalleled track record in successfully developing residential, retail, hospitality, e-commerce, technology, logistics, food and beverage, and venture capital assets that have transformed lifestyles worldwide.

Over the years, he developed world-class mixed-use projects, including his retail ventures, across more than 20 markets spanning the Middle East, North Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

Mohammed Alabbar went beyond all this to share his insightful ideas—some about success, freelancing, and how to select outstanding employees. He also envisioned establishing an annual conference for young online entrepreneurs, advocating for leaving traditional jobs to embrace freelancing, driven by his genuine love for his country as a proud Emirati citizen.

The global businessman Mohammed Alabbar recounts that he began his career as a bank employee in Abu Dhabi. He was once offered a transfer to Singapore but initially refused since he had just returned from the United States. However, his manager insisted, recognizing it as beneficial for both the company and Alabbar himself—a man Alabbar credits for much of his development.

He explains that he spent seven years in Singapore, learning a great deal despite the challenges faced at the time. Upon returning, he decided to bring the expertise of major real estate institutions he observed there to the UAE and founded Emaar Properties without much prior experience in the sector. He persevered through obstacles until the company grew alongside Dubai’s and the UAE’s economic boom, thanks to wise leadership.

He notes facing many challenges along his economic journey, three of which were especially difficult: intense competition with strong government institutions, which motivated him to offer the best prices while maintaining quality and customer service; the global financial crisis in 2008 when markets declined sharply; and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which closed airports and restricted movement.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Mohammed Alabbar has never missed a global event without sharing his innovative ideas and objective analyses. He has always been passionate about youth and the success of the nation, embodying the spirit of a true Emirati to the core.
